The Mona Lisa is a half-length portrait painting by Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. The painting is of a woman with a faint smile, believed to be Lisa del Giocondo, the wife of Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo. It is one of the most famous and iconic paintings in the world. It was painted sometime between 1503 and 1519, and is believed to have been commissioned by Francesco del Giocondo as a portrait of his wife. The painting is in oil on a poplar panel, and is 77 x 53 cm (30 x 21 in). It is now housed at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.
