The fort was built in 1623 after Maurice of Orange attempted to capture the city in 1603 and 1622. Each time, the people of ’s-Hertogenbosch flooded the surrounding marshes. Maurice had occupied a hill south of the city, which the locals later recognized as strategic. After defeating him, they built the Pettelaarse Schans there. It saw battle in 1629 during the siege by Frederick Henry. The fort was demolished in 1672 to prevent French capture during the Dutch War.
