Messier 42 the Great Orion Nebula. Located 1,300 light-years away in the Orion molecular cloud complex which is one of the closest star-forming regions to Earth. At the core of M42 is the Trapezium, a cluster of four clusters of stars that are responsible for ionizing the hydrogen gas in the nebula giving it its vibrant red hue. Above M42 lies M43 De Mairan’s Nebula which is a part of the same nebula that appears detached by a dust lane. Above the Orion Nebula is SH2-279 the Running Man Nebula.
