Baybayin is a pre-Spanish 14th to 18th century writing system used in the Philippines to write Tagalog & other Philippine languages. It is an abugida, a writing system that combines a consonant & vowel into a single symbol that represents a syllable. Baybayin has 14 consonant characters & three vowel characters. Each consonant character is combined with the vowel sound 'a' to create a syllable. Ex: he consonant 'B' becomes 'Ba'. To change the vowel sound, a mark called a 'kudlit' is used.
