Samurai Kusunoki Masashige

The inspiration for this painting is the bronze statue of the Samurai Kusunoki Masashige in Tokio. Kusunoki Masashige (1294 – 4 July 1336) was remembered for his commitment to the samurai code of conduct. Kusunoki ultimately sacrificed his life to demonstrate his loyalty to the emperor. I practiced the martial arts for decades. This included, Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu, one of the oldest Japanese martial arts which was founded by Iizasa Choisai Ienao in 1447.
