The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird is a retired high-altitude, long-range strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed and operated by the United States Air Force. It was designed as a replacement for the Lockheed A-12 Oxcart, and entered service in 1964. The SR-71 was capable of Mach 3.2 and an altitude of 85,000 feet, and was used for strategic reconnaissance missions over Cuba, Vietnam, and North Korea. It was retired in 1998, but remains an iconic symbol of American aviation history.
