The F-22 Raptor is a fifth-generation, single-seat, twin-engine, all-weather stealth tactical fighter aircraft developed for the United States Air Force (USAF). The aircraft was designed primarily as an air superiority fighter, but has additional capabilities that include ground attack, electronic warfare, and signals intelligence roles. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, Northrop Grumman, and Boeing developed the aircraft for the USAF, and Northrop Grumman was the prime contractor. The aircraft was originally designated the F-22 Lightning II, but was renamed the F-22 Raptor in 1997. The F-22 has a combination of stealth, aerodynamic agility, avionics, and integrated avionics that give the pilot an operational advantage over other aircraft.
