The North American Aviation F-86D Sabre is a transonic fighter aircraft that was developed for the United States Air Force. It was designed as a follow-on to the F-86 Sabre, and was intended to provide improved performance at high altitudes. The F-86D was powered by a single General Electric J47 turbojet engine, and was armed with six .50 caliber machine guns. It had a maximum speed of 670 mph and a range of 1,200 miles. The F-86D was used extensively in the Korean War, where it proved to be a formidable opponent for the MiG-15. It was also used in the Vietnam War, where it was used primarily for ground attack missions. The F-86D was retired from service in the 1970s.
