Katakana is used to write foreign words and names, as well as some Japanese words and phrases. The chart shows the 46 basic katakana characters, each of which represents a mora, or sound unit. The characters are arranged in rows and columns, with each row representing a different vowel sound and each column representing a different consonant sound.
