The King and I is a 1956 American musical film directed by Walter Lang and starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. The film is based on the 1951 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical of the same name, which in turn was based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon. The film tells the story of Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher who is hired to teach the children of the King of Siam. Anna and the King develop a close relationship, but their different cultures and beliefs often lead to conflict.
