The Messerschmitt Me 262, often called the Schwalbe or Sturmvogel, was the world's first operational jet fighter aircraft. Designed by Willy Messerschmitt and produced by Messerschmitt AG, it was first flown in 1942 and entered service with the Luftwaffe in 1944. The Me 262 was faster and more maneuverable than any Allied fighter of its time, and it quickly became a formidable opponent in the skies over Europe. However, the Me 262 was also expensive and complex to produce, and it was only built in limited numbers. Despite its limited numbers, the Me 262 had a significant impact on the course of World War II, and it remains one of the most iconic aircraft of all time.
