Great Wave on Yellow Moon
The artwork is a ukiyo-e woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hokusai. It was published sometime between 1829 and 1833 during the Edo period of Japanese history as the first print in Hokusai's series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”. It is also known as “Under the Wave off Kanagawa”. The print depicts a large wave threatening three boats off the coast of the Kanagawa Prefecture. Mount Fuji is visible in the background. The wave is depicted in a highly stylized manner, with a number of sharp points and a dark, ominous color scheme. The boats are shown as being tossed about by the wave, and the people in the boats are shown as being terrified. The print is a masterpiece of Japanese art and is one of the most famous works of art in the world.
