The F-117 Nighthawk is a retired single-seat, twin-engine stealth attack aircraft developed for the United States Air Force (USAF). Designed for night and all-weather attacks, the F-117 was the first operational aircraft designed around stealth technology. Lockheed Aeronautics Works, a division of the Lockheed Corporation, developed and manufactured the aircraft. The F-117's maiden flight occurred on June 18, 1981, and it entered service in 1983. The Nighthawk was used in the 1991 Gulf War, where it proved highly effective in destroying Iraqi air defenses and ground targets. The F-117 was retired in 2008 and replaced by the F-22 Raptor.
