The artwork is a ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, published sometime between 1829-1833, during the Edo period of Japanese history as the first print in Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. It depicts a large wave threatening to crash over three boats in the foreground, with Mount Fuji in the background. The wave is depicted in a stylized form, with a number of parallel lines to suggest its height and power. The print has become one of the most famous works of Japanese art in the world.
