Carmen is an opera by Georges Bizet, first performed in 1875. It is based on the novella of the same name by Prosper Mérimée. The story is set in 19th-century Spain and tells the tale of Carmen, a passionate and free-spirited woman who is loved by two men: Don José, a naïve soldier, and Escamillo, a bullfighter. Carmen ultimately chooses Escamillo over Don José, which leads to Don José's downfall.
