The artwork is a ukiyo-e woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hokusai. It is part of his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and was published sometime between 1829-1833. The print depicts a large wave threatening three boats off the coast of Kanagawa, with Mount Fuji in the background. The wave is depicted in a highly stylized manner, with a swirling, almost abstract pattern. The print is considered to be one of the most famous works of Japanese art in the world.
