St. Peter's Square is a large, oval-shaped plaza in Vatican City, directly in front of St. Peter's Basilica. It is one of the most famous and iconic squares in the world, and a popular tourist destination. The square was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 17th century, and is surrounded by imposing buildings, including the Vatican Museums and the Apostolic Palace. In the center of the square is an Egyptian obelisk, which was brought to Rome by the Emperor Caligula in 37 AD. The square is also home to two fountains, designed by Bernini, which are located on either side of the obelisk.
