The copper statue, designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States and is a symbol of freedom and democracy. The statue is 151 feet (46 m) tall and weighs 450,000 pounds (204,117 kg). It is made of copper sheets that were hammered into shape and then assembled on a steel framework.
