The SR-71 Blackbird is a retired reconnaissance aircraft designed and built by Lockheed Martin for the United States Air Force. It was developed as a replacement for the Lockheed A-12 Oxcart, and entered service in 1964. The SR-71 was designed to fly at high altitudes and speeds, and was capable of Mach 3.2 (2,193 mph; 3,527 km/h). It was used for reconnaissance missions over Cuba, Vietnam, and North Korea, and was retired in 1998. The SR-71 remains an iconic aircraft, and is considered one of the most advanced and successful aircraft ever built.
