Myoglobin is a protein found in muscle tissue that stores oxygen. It is a globular protein with a molecular weight of approximately 17,000 daltons. Myoglobin consists of a single polypeptide chain of 153 amino acids. The protein is folded into eight alpha-helices, which are arranged in a globin fold. The heme group, which contains the iron atom that binds oxygen, is located in a pocket in the protein. Myoglobin is found in the cytoplasm of muscle cells. It binds oxygen when the oxygen concentration is high, and releases it when the oxygen concentration is low. This allows muscle cells to store oxygen for use during periods of high activity.
