Popocatepetl is an active stratovolcano located in the states of Puebla, Morelos, and Mexico in central Mexico. The volcano is located in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The name Popocatépetl (meaning “smoking mountain” in Nahuatl) is derived from the Nahuatl words popócatl (“smoke”) and tepetl (“mountain”). The mountain is also known as El Popo or Don Goyo.
