The sculpture depicts Prometheus, a Titan from Greek mythology who was punished by Zeus for stealing fire from Mount Olympus and giving it to humanity. He was chained to a rock and subjected to having his liver eaten by an eagle every day, only to have it regenerate overnight. Prometheus endured this torture for thousands of years until he was eventually freed by Hercules.
