Douglas F4D Skyray

The Douglas F4D Skyray was a carrier-based fighter aircraft developed for the United States Navy in the 1950s. It was designed by Douglas Aircraft Company's El Segundo division and was intended to be a supersonic interceptor capable of defending the fleet from high-altitude Soviet bombers. The Skyray was a radical departure from previous fighter designs, featuring a delta wing and swept wing, as well as an afterburning turbojet engine. It was also the first single-seat, single-engine fighter to exceed Mach 1 in level flight. Despite its advanced design, the Skyray was not a commercial success and only a limited number were built.
