It was designed and built by Boeing as a private venture, and was intended to meet a United States Army Air Service requirement for a new fighter. The XP-8 was a single-seat, single-engine aircraft with a wooden fuselage and fabric-covered wings. It had a wingspan of 28 feet and a length of 21 feet. The XP-8 was powered by a single Wright R-1820 radial engine, which gave it a top speed of 155 miles per hour. The XP-8 was armed with two .30 caliber machine guns.
