Phobos, the innermost and larger of Mars' two moons, is heavily cratered, with deep grooves on its surface. It is thought to be composed of a mixture of rock and ice, and is likely to have been captured by Mars early in its history. Phobos is a dark, irregularly shaped object with a diameter of 22.2 km and an average distance from Mars of 9,380 km. It orbits Mars three times a day, and its gravity is so weak that a person could jump off of it with ease.
