The flag of Burkina Faso is a horizontal tricolor of red, green, and yellow with a yellow five-pointed star in the center. It was adopted on August 4, 1984, to replace the flag of the Republic of Upper Volta, which had been in use since 1958. The red represents the blood of the martyrs of the revolution, the green represents the country's vegetation, and the yellow represents the mineral wealth of the country. The star represents the guiding light of the revolution.
