Japanese wave
The artwork is a digital reproduction of the famous ukiyo-e woodblock print 'Under the Wave off Kanagawa', also known as 'The Great Wave', by the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. It was published sometime between 1829 and 1833 during the Edo period of Japanese history as the first print in Hokusai's series 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji'. The print depicts a large wave threatening to crash over three boats in the foreground, with Mount Fuji in the background. The wave is depicted in a highly stylized manner, with a number of sharp curves and a blue-and-white color scheme. The print has been widely reproduced and reinterpreted in popular culture, and is considered to be one of the most iconic works of Japanese art.
