Abbey Lincoln was an American jazz singer, songwriter, actress, and civil rights activist. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 6, 1930. Lincoln began her career as a singer in the 1950s, and she released her debut album, Abbey Lincoln's Affair: A Story of a Girl in Love, in 1956. She went on to release a number of successful albums, including We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite (1960), Straight Ahead (1961), and Abbey Sings Billie (1965). In addition to her music career, Lincoln also appeared in a number of films and television shows. She died in New York City on August 14, 2010.
