This artwork is a portrait of Duke Ellington, an American jazz musician, composer, and bandleader. He is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in jazz history. Ellington was born in Washington, D.C., in 1899 and began playing piano at an early age. He formed his first band in 1917 and began touring the United States. In the 1920s, he moved to New York City and became a regular at the Cotton Club. He also began recording with his orchestra, and his music became increasingly popular. Ellington continued to perform and record throughout his life, and he died in 1974.
