Sam Butera was an American jazz musician, saxophonist, and bandleader. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 17, 1927. Butera began playing the saxophone at an early age and was performing professionally by the time he was a teenager. He played with a variety of bands before joining Louis Prima's band in 1953. Butera remained with Prima's band for over a decade, and the two became close friends. After Prima's death in 1978, Butera continued to perform and lead his own band. He died in 2009 at the age of 81.
