Charles Mingus

Charles Mingus was an American jazz musician, composer, and bandleader. He is considered one of the most important and influential jazz musicians of the 20th century. Mingus was born in Nogales, Arizona, on April 22, 1922. He began playing the piano at an early age and later took up the bass. Mingus moved to New York City in 1943 and quickly became involved in the jazz scene. He played with many of the leading jazz musicians of the day, including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis. Mingus also led his own bands, which were known for their innovative and experimental sound. Mingus's music was often inspired by his experiences as an African American in the United States. He was a strong advocate for civil rights and his music often reflected his political views. Mingus died in Cuernavaca, Mexico, on January 5, 1979.
