Sam Butera was an American saxophonist and bandleader, best known for his work with Louis Armstrong. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 17, 1927, and died in Las Vegas, Nevada, on June 6, 2009. Butera began playing the saxophone at an early age and was performing professionally by the time he was a teenager. He joined Armstrong's band in 1958 and remained with him until Armstrong's death in 1971. Butera continued to perform and record after Armstrong's death, and he also led his own band. He was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2009.
