K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth, after Mount Everest. It is located in the Karakoram mountain range, on the border between Pakistan and China. It is also known as Mount Godwin-Austen, after the British explorer who first surveyed the area in the 1850s. K2 is a very challenging mountain to climb, and it has been called the 'savage mountain' because of the harsh conditions and the high risk of avalanches. It was first climbed in 1954 by an Italian expedition led by Ardito Desio.
