The Grande Arche de la Défense (or simply La Grande Arche) is a monumental building located in the business district of La Défense, to the west of Paris, France. It was designed by Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen and completed in 1989 to commemorate the bicentennial of the French Revolution. The 110-meter-high (361 ft) structure is a hollow cube made of white Carrara marble and glass, and it is the largest of the 13 monumental structures that make up the Axe historique (Historical Axis) of Paris. The Grande Arche is a popular tourist destination and a symbol of modern Paris.
