The Rosetta Stone is a granodiorite stele inscribed with three versions of a decree issued at Memphis, Egypt, in 196 BC on behalf of King Ptolemy V Epiphanes. The top and middle sections of the text are written in Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and Demotic script, respectively, while the bottom section is in Ancient Greek. The decree has been crucial to the deciphering of the Egyptian hieroglyphs, and is generally considered the key to the modern understanding of Egyptian language and writing.
