The Vostok rocket was a Soviet space launch vehicle that was used to launch the first human into space, Yuri Gagarin, on April 12, 1961. The rocket was designed by Sergei Korolev and was based on the R-7 missile. It consisted of a central core stage and four strap-on boosters. The core stage was powered by four RD-107 engines, each of which produced 1020 kN of thrust. The strap-on boosters were powered by four RD-108 engines, each of which produced 830 kN of thrust. The Vostok rocket was 32.4 meters tall and had a diameter of 2.9 meters. It weighed 28.7 tons at liftoff. The Vostok rocket was a major achievement in the history of space exploration. It paved the way for the first human landing on the moon in 1969.
