Oriental Sculpture

This sculpture depicts Avalokiteshvara, also known as Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. It is a masterpiece of Chinese sculpture from the Ming dynasty, carved from a single piece of wood. The bodhisattva is seated in a meditative pose, with a serene expression on her face. Her右手 is raised in the '施无畏印' (gesture of fearlessness), while her left hand rests on her knee in the '与愿印' (gesture of granting wishes). She wears a flowing robe and a bejeweled crown, and her hair is adorned with a delicate tiara. The sculpture is a beautiful example of Ming dynasty Buddhist art, and it is a testament to the skill and devotion of the Chinese sculptors of the period.
