The Grumman F9F Cougar was a carrier-based fighter jet developed for the United States Navy in the early 1950s. It was designed to replace the F8F Bearcat and entered service in 1952. The Cougar was powered by a single Pratt & Whitney J48 turbojet engine and had a maximum speed of 650 mph. It was armed with four 20mm cannons and could carry a variety of bombs and rockets. The Cougar was used extensively in the Korean War and was also deployed in Vietnam. It was retired from service in the early 1970s.
