Amaryllis is a genus of flowering plants in the family Amaryllidaceae, first described in 1753. The name is often applied to the belladonna lily, Amaryllis belladonna, which is the type species of the genus. This plant is native to the Cape Province of South Africa, where it grows in sandy, well-drained soil, often in rocky areas. The showy flowers are produced in umbels of 2-12, each flower with six petals that are usually a bright red color, but can also be pink, white, or purple. The leaves are long and strap-shaped, and grow from the base of the plant. Amaryllis is a popular garden plant, and is also forced for indoor bloom.
