The Buran spacecraft was a reusable spacecraft developed by the Soviet Union in the 1980s. It was designed to be the Soviet equivalent of the American Space Shuttle and was intended to be used for a variety of purposes, including space exploration, satellite deployment, and military missions. The Buran program was a major undertaking, and it involved the development of a new rocket, the Energia, as well as the construction of a new launch pad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The Buran spacecraft was successfully launched into orbit in 1988, but the program was canceled shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
