This is an image of the first atomic bomb, nicknamed 'Gadget', which was detonated as part of the Trinity test on July 16, 1945, in the Jornada del Muerto desert in New Mexico. The test was the culmination of the Manhattan Project, a top-secret research and development effort that began in 1942 and involved the collaboration of scientists from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The Trinity test was a success, and it paved the way for the use of atomic bombs in World War II.
