The Olmec colossal head is a monumental stone sculpture from the Olmec civilization, dating back to the Formative period of Mesoamerican chronology (c. 1500-400 BCE). Carved from a single block of basalt, the head stands 2.83 meters (9 ft 3 in) tall and weighs approximately 25 tons. It was discovered in 1938 by a farmer named Francisco Beverido in the rainforest near Tres Zapotes, Veracruz, Mexico. The head is one of the most iconic artifacts of the Olmec civilization and is considered a masterpiece of ancient Mesoamerican art.
