The Schneider CA1 was a French heavy tank of World War I. It was the first tank to be produced in large numbers, and saw action on the Western Front from 1916 to 1918. The CA1 was designed by Schneider et Cie, and was based on the earlier Saint-Chamond tank. It had a crew of four, and was armed with a 75mm gun and two machine guns. The CA1 was slow and cumbersome, but it was well-protected and had a good cross-country performance. It was used in a variety of roles, including infantry support, breakthrough operations, and trench warfare.
